Book review

The setup fits on a postcard.
A young sailor named Edmond Dantès has everything lined up: his own ship to captain, a woman he's about to marry, a good life waiting for him. And then, on the day it should all come together, he's arrested for something he didn't do and locked away in a cliffside prison with no trial and no way out. That's roughly the first fifty pages. I'm not going to tell you what happens after that, because watching it unfold is the entire point.
But I'll tell you why a book from 1844 is still one of the most satisfying things you can pick up today. On the surface it's a revenge story, and it's a great one. But what stuck with me is that it's really a book about patience. About what happens to a person when everything is taken from them and all they have left is time and a plan.
It asks a question that never gets old: when someone wrongs you, where's the line between justice and revenge, and does getting even actually cost you something too? You don't need to care about the 1840s to feel any of that. And don't let the size scare you off. Yes, it's long, most full editions run past 1,200 pages.
But Dumas originally wrote it as a serial, a few chapters at a time in the newspaper, so it's built to keep you turning pages. Nearly every chapter ends on a small hook that makes "one more" turn into fifty more. It reads faster than books a third of its length. This is the classic to reach for if you've ever thought classics were homework.
Who it's for: anyone who loves a proper plot, anyone who wants a "gateway" classic that doesn't feel like a chore, and anyone who enjoys watching a carefully laid plan slowly click into place. Verdict: worth every page.
